NORTH CAROLINA -- AN ABUNDANCE OF TOP-NOTCH GOLF COURSES

What can be said about North Carolina golf that hasn’t already been said? Year after year, the state ranks high in having an abundance of spectacular golf courses in equally spectacular locations. Whether you are selecting your retirement destination to be on a golf course community, or to be within easy driving distance of many great courses, your options are practically limitless. In many parts of the state, golfers can enjoy their favorite courses for ten or more months out of the year.

Below we’ve highlighted a few that we like:

Tanglewood Golf Club, Clemmons, NC
Tanglewood boasts two award-winning golf courses: the Championship Course, designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and the Reynolds Course. Tanglewood is consistently rated as one of the premier public golf facilities in the nation. Their courses are as challenging as they are beautiful. To round out your experience, Tanglewood Park also offers  an aquatic center,  stables,  BMX racing, fishing,  boating, mountain bike trails and tennis.

The Grove Park Inn Golf Course, Asheville, NC
At the Grove Park, you can experience one of the most beautiful and historic golf courses in North Carolina, with 18 holes of “golf heaven.” Their legendary North Carolina golf course offers a practice putting green, professional instruction, club rentals, golf packages, and an upscale pro shop with an extensive offering of name brand apparel, accessories and logoed items. Set in the heart of Asheville and the North Carolina mountains, it’s an ideal golf experience.

Pinehurst Resort, Pinehurst, NC
Often referred to as the mecca of golf, Pinehurst features eight unique golf courses, making it the largest golf resort in America. Ross, Fazio, Maples, Jones and most recently, Coore & Crenshaw have made each course a unique test of golf. Pinehurst No. 2, No. 8 and No. 4 are consistently ranked among the world's best, while Nos. 1 & 3 reflect Donald Ross's most original PInehurst works.

Tiger’s Eye Golf Links, Sunset Beach, NC
Located in Ocean Ridge Plantation, Tiger’s Eye Golf Links,  is an upscale, daily-fee, 18-hole golf course carved from a virgin pine and hardwood forest in Sunset Beach, N.C. Designed by master golf course architect and land planner Tim Cate, Tiger’s Eye is one of four championship layouts at Ocean Ridge Plantation — Panther’s Run, Lion’s Paw and Leopard’s Chase. Tiger's Eye has been recognized by several national golf publications as being among the best in the country.

Old North State Club, New London, NC
In 1991 Tom Fazio ventured into the piedmont of North Carolina and created a masterpiece along a 2 1/2 mile peninsula in Badin Lake. The piece of land now known as Uwharrie Point was soon developed, succeeded in 1991 by the golf course bearing the historic name for North Carolina "Old North State." The course quickly attained reputation with golfers from across the nation, and in its opening year, was awarded the #2 ranking in Golf Digest's "Best New Private Courses in America."  It's currently ranked 3rd in the state for private courses. Tom Fazio's masterpiece is a Par 72 and 7,102 yards.

WHY RETIRE TO NORTH CAROLINA?

With the advent of the internet, there is no shortage of facts and statistics about North Carolina -- its geography, demographics, cost of living, and so on. But as you plan your retirement destination, and compare the benefits of retiring to North Carolina versus somewhere else in the south, there are more qualitative and subjective aspects to consider too.

NORTH CAROLINA'S DIVERSE PUBLIC UNIVERSITY NETWORK

A unique and attractive feature of a retirement lifestyle in North Carolina is the rich, diverse and geographically convenient network of public, North Carolina-supported universities. The parent organization, the University of North Carolina, is a public, multi-campus university dedicated to the service of North Carolina and its people. It encompasses 16 diverse constituent institutions and other educational, research, and public service organizations. Each shares in the overall mission of the University.

Collectively, the system had approximately 175,000 undergraduates and 45,500 graduate students enrolled in the fall of 2011. Interestingly, students over the age of 35 represent 6% of the undergraduate enrollment across the system.

The University’s stated mission is to discover, create, transmit, and apply knowledge to address the needs of individuals and society. This mission is accomplished through instruction, which communicates the knowledge and values and imparts the skills necessary for individuals to lead responsible, productive, and personally satisfying lives; through research, scholarship, and creative activities, which advance knowledge and enhance the educational process; and through public service, which contributes to the solution of societal problems and enriches the quality of life in the State. In the fulfillment of this mission, the University shall seek an efficient use of available resources to ensure the highest quality in its service to the citizens of the State.

Teaching and learning constitute the primary service that the University renders to society. Teaching, or instruction, is the primary responsibility of each of the constituent institutions. The relative importance of research and public service, which enhance teaching and learning, varies among the constituent institutions, depending on their overall missions.
